Inghean

[ɪnjən]

In Gaelic, Inghean means “daughter”, “girl”, or “maiden”.  It was traditionally used in naming systems to denote lineage, such as in the phrases inghean uí or inghean Mhic, which translate to “daughter of.”

The term is widely recognized as the linguistic root of the name Imogen.  This connection is famously attributed to William Shakespeare, who is believed to have intended the name Innogen (derived from Inghean) for a character in his play Cymbeline, only for a printing error to permanently establish it as “Imogen”.

Fundamentally associated with femininity, the name and its derived forms often carry the connotation of an “innocent girl”.
